Israeli women and the Haredim. A controversy in the making that could get ugly.

Israeli women and the Haredim. A controversy in the making that could get ugly. From the New York Times an article….Israeli Women Core of Debate On Orthodoxy, by Ethan Bronner and Isabel Kershner. Jerusalem!

“A fool throws a stone into a well and 1000 sages can’t remove it,” says Rabbi Dror Moshe Cassouto, a 33-year-old Hasidic, whose goal is to spread the light. “God watches over the Jewish nation, as long as it studies Torah.”

He is horrified about the spitting incidents and Nazi talk. He claims hard liners have caused harm to the Haredim. When asked about this he said, a fool throws a stone…and sages can’t retrieve it from a well, quote.

Jerusalem

31 hours in Jerusalem

Three months ago the Israeli Health Ministry awarded pediatric professor, Channa Maayan for her book on hereditary deceases common to Jews. She was forbidden to take the stage to receive her prize, she was separated from her husband, and she was instructed that a male colleague would have to accept the award on her behalf. She complied with everything and yet a controversy has arisen.

Other have not taken this affront to women quietly. Maayan’s story is “entering the pantheon of secular anger building as a battle rages in Israel for control of the public space between the strictly religious and everyone else.”

“The place of the ultra-Orthodox Jews, an issue that has been neglected, has erupted into a crisis.”

What follows in the article is about “hadarat nashim, the exclusion of women and the Haredim.

I find it ridiculous that society still pays attention to the ultra-anything. I think it’s time to set the balance so that all can share open spaces without feeling being violated.

“The coexistence between the two is breaking down,” said Arye Carmon, president of the Israeli Democracy Institute. “It is an extreme danger.”

Finally! We Have Reached an Altitude Where it is Safe…

Posted in Photography & Travel by nycnyc on January 28, 2012

Finally! I sit down to write about something I’m not sure if I have been throughly convinced. No it’s not global warming, that I’m convinced already. I’m looking forward to the storms, floods, winds, and earthquakes this Earth will subject us in the coming years. Scientists are warning us to change our ways, but many skeptics continue to live without heeding their advice.

This is a pet peeve. I can’t stand those who hide behind their electronic gadgets. Stephen Hawking, needs gadgets to communicate and to transport himself. Those who are able to ambulate and have social intercourse do not need to interpose a gadget between himself and others.

Now to the ignorance of my mind. FLYERS REFUSE TO TURN OFF DEVICES. Items used despite safety warnings by Gary Stoller USA TODAY.

A USA TODAY investigation confirms that the worry about electronic devices is not baseless: The devices emit radio signals that CAN interfere with cockpit instruments and flight systems.

Why are Boeing and Airbus industries building such fragile flying machines?

I’m still not convinced.

“We really need to get the technical findings out to the public and tell them it’s dangerous to use their portable electronic devices in flight,” says Bill Strauss an electrical engineer whose doctoral thesis at Carnegie Mellon University studied use of electronic devices in-flight.

O.K. I’m impressed by the Carnegie Mellon credentials.

Advisories by government aviation officials, reviews of accidents reports, airline pilots’ incident reports, electromagnetic interference (EMI) experts, unions, college professors, flight attendants and not one accident has been cited due to EMI, but pilots have reported cases where their instruments went haywire. The probable cause was EMI.

EMI has been suspected in military aircraft accidents and has been an undetected factor in some crashes.

A pilot’s use of a cell phone in the cockpit resulted in his death and that of his passengers. The EMI distracted his mind. He did not monitor his altitude while landing.

Random interference has been cited. It can cause the improper functioning of aircraft avionics. Navigation and/or Auto Pilot for example.

I’m still not convinced. American Airlines was given approval by the FAA to its pilots to use electronic tablets in cockpits with the Wi-Fi off!

Since flight attendants were consulted in this study I am now convinced EMI will not interfere with anything below ten thousand feet. I have seen the glow of their iPhones while taking off and while landing.

It is now time to allow everyone to use their electronic devices but please do not converse with your neighbor. I want to sleep.

Women Seeking an Abortion in Texas must be Subjected to Cruel and Unusual Punishment

Posted in National & Local by nycnyc on January 28, 2012

The Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a Texas law that requires women seeking an abortion to have a sonogram exam and to listen to a physician’s detailed description of the fetus, including whether it has developed limbs or internal organs. All this is to discourage them from undergoing the procedure.
I find this practice to be an extremely cruel treatment of a woman who has made, what I can only imagine is a very difficult decision. Most women I believe, come to this decision, with a heavy heart. To subject them to listen and view the creature to be killed, only makes abortion more unappealable.

I recorded last week on WLNY a documentary on abortion. This is probably the most direct and cold way to describe abortion. Their gruesome presentation lasted about 20 minutes. I couldn’t believe that I was actually being convinced that Roe vs. Wade should be overturned.
