Bryant Gumbel has a thing about the Winter Olympics—and it relates back to the Greek origins of the Olympics.

“I’m not a fan. I think the name Winter Olympics is an oxymoron,” he jokes—barely—during a phone call. “I think the ancient Greeks would look at these games and go, ‘Play what?’ I don’t think the Greeks ever did any ski jumping or ice-skating. Or cross-country skiing with guns. Somehow I think the Greeks might have missed that part of it.”

He pauses. “So I wish they’d call it what it is: made-up games for revenue.”
