Another view: What do we do with Qatar?

By Jennifer Rubin, The Washington Post

The Washington Post reports:

“Four Arab nations led a diplomatic break with Qatar on Monday, moving swiftly to isolate the small but influential country after accusing Qatar’s rulers of supporting terrorist factions and stoking regional conflicts.

“The countries – Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain – released separate and apparently coordinated statements saying they would cut air, sea and land links with Qatar, which hosts a forward base for the U.S. military’s Central Command and is home to the widely watched Al Jazeera network.

“Some other countries later joined the four-nation bloc in cutting ties with Qatar, which is also the venue for the 2022 World Cup.Eye_of_Horus_Right.svg Continue reading

has chosen Qatar to be the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ on December 2, 2010.  Competing to host this World Cup™, were AustraliaJapanKorea Republic, the United States of America and Qatar. In round 1, Australia was eliminated.  In round 2, Japan was eliminated and in round 3, Korea Republic was eliminated leaving just the United States of America and Qatar as the finalists.  Sadly the United States has again lost a chance to be the host of a major sporting event.  Qatar was chosen in Round 4 by a vote of 14-8.

In their Why Qatar? official bid site a statement reads: Hosting the tournament in the Middle East for the first time will be a landmark for the region and a profound statement about cross-cultural understanding. We’re pioneering technologies that will allow for outdoor, air-conditioned stadiums that will be carbon neutral, benefiting the environment and creating ideal conditions for players and spectators.

However, today Peter Velappan, the former general secretary of the Asian Football Confederation has urged FIFA to change the timing of the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ warning the Federation of the dangers posed by playing in temperatures reaching 40 degrees Centrigrade in the desert state of Qatar. He added that plans to cool stadiums and training grounds with air conditioners were “not a solution” and that some European countries might boycott the tournament due to concerns over the heat.

and contradicting the cross-cultural understanding is a comment by Michel Ansoms (not verified).

The comment by this disgruntled man states:
